Hugh McElhenny is a member of both the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame. In the pro’s, he was a 6x Pro Bowler, a member of the NFL 1950s All-Decade Team and his No. 39 is retired by the 49ers. Hugh is quoted as saying “My attitude carrying the ball was fear—not a fear of getting hurt but a fear of getting caught from behind and taken down and embarrassing myself and my teammates. Inside the back of the neck is the Wilson label with a ‘Medium’’ tag attached. Team name (FORTY NINERS) is done on the back in white tackle twill. The right sleeve is signed and inscribed ‘Hugh “The King” McElhenny Rookie of the year 1952 all pro 1952 MVP Pro Bowl 1958 H.O.F. 1970” in black marker, in our opinion rating a 8. The lettering on the back seems to have been relocated or recentered by the team, during the period. This cape is properly tagged, presented to us as game-used and in our opinion shows excellent wear. We are told by our consignor that this cape was acquired directly from McElhenny. Accompanied by an ALOA from JSA.
