Hall of Famer Barry Sanders was perhaps the most electrifying athlete of the 1990s. Every time the Detroit Lions star running back touched the ball he had the ability to make something magical happen. Sanders dazzled fans, frustrated defenses and thrilled teammates and coaches alike with his ability to elude defenders. Well on his way to eclipsing the all-time career rushing mark, Sanders opted to leave the game on top after the 1998 season. He finished his brilliant 10-year career with 15,269 yards rushing and 109 touchdowns. Presented is an incredibly rare and highly sought-after piece of NFL history – a game-used Detroit Lions helmet worn by Sanders. This helmet shows tremendous wear and evidence of being worn over multiple seasons, with face clips dating back to 1989 and a reconditioning sticker indicating use prior to the 1991 season and then the 1992 Pro Bowl that followed. We believe that the helmet was worn by Sanders on several occasions over multiple seasons, as the internal padding matches to the 1990 NFL season, the helmet displays the 1991 Mike Utley decal on the rear, and the helmet photo matches to the 1992 Pro Bowl. Sanders signed the shell of the helmet in black marker with the added inscription “Pro Bowl 92” and in our opinion rates an 8. This is an incredibly rare piece of NFL history that was worn by one of the greatest running backs of all time.
