The most celebrated athlete of his generation, Babe Ruth's fame extends far beyond the game of baseball, a true legend. Ruth exemplified the ultimate in sportsmanship and athleticism, and was a hero of mythic proportions to youngsters and adults from all walks of life. Babe Ruth was sold to the Yankees in 1919 in the most infamous trade in baseball history. In his first season as a Yankee (1920), Ruth belted a whopping 54 home runs, far surpassing his own record of 29. The "Sultan of Swat" went on hit 60 homers in 1927 (the year of this baseball), a feat not surpassed until 1961. He averaged over 50 homers a season from 1926 to 1931, hitting a home run on average once every 12 plate appearances. His career slugging percentage of .690 is far ahead of runner up Ted Williams (.634). Ruth was a seven time World Series Champion, was enshrined in Cooperstown in 1936 and his number “3” jersey was retired by the NY Yankees in June of 1948. One of the most desirable icons in the world of collecting, a Babe Ruth signed baseball is one of the few items with an appeal so universal that it transcends all areas of collecting. This Ruth single-signed baseball is indeed special and a rare treasure. OAL (BBJ) baseball with multi-color stitching, far more desirable for a Ruth single than the red stitched versions. The patent date, March 17, 1925 along with the red hand-stamped side panel notation marks this baseball’s usage during the 1927 season. “Babe” Ruth appears on the sweet spot in period black tip fountain pen rating a strong 9. A uniform clear coat has been applied to the sweet spot to preserve the signature. The ball shows light toning throughout with a Vintage PSA/DNA sticker affixed numbered “A91964”. Balls of this quality rarely come up for auction and the few that exist are buried deep within established, sophisticated collections. This treasure of American and Sports history is accompanied by a LOA from JSA and backed by a LOA from PSA/DNA, dated 2002 which states in its body, “This is perhaps the finest 1927 vintage example of a Babe Ruth signature in the hobby. The overall quality and historical significance of this item is the best version of a Ruth single-signed baseball that I have ever had the pleasure of examining (signed) James J. Spence, Jr.”. It is further accompanied by a LOA stating that this ball was on display at the 2009 inaugural and World Championship season of the new Yankee Stadium at the Museum.
