“The Great One” is the leading point-scorer in NHL history, with more assists than any other player has points, and is the only NHL player to total over 200 points in one season – a feat he accomplished four times. In addition, he tallied over 100 points in 16 professional seasons, 14 of them consecutive. After his retirement in 1999, he was immediately inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, making him the most recent player to have the waiting period waived. The NHL retired his jersey number 99 league-wide, making him the only player to receive this honor. Presented is one of the most historically significant jerseys in hockey history from the greatest player of all-time. Wayne Gretzky wore this jersey when hoisting the Stanley Cup after sweeping the Boston Bruins in four games in what would ultimately be Gretzky’s final game as an Edmonton Oiler. During Game 4, with 3:23 remaining in the second period, moments after the Oilers tied the score at 3-3, the electricity went out. After much deliberation from Edmonton, Boston and League officials, it was decided the game would not be finished that night. With the series back in Edmonton two days later, the Oilers beat the Bruins 6-3 to complete the sweep and win their fourth Stanley Cup in five seasons while Wayne wore this jersey and in the locker room. Gretzky won the Conn Smythe Trophy with 12 goals and 31 assists for 43 points. Gretzky was traded to the Los Angeles Kings 12 weeks after the Oilers Championship and shocked the hockey world. This jersey which is publicly offered for the first time is covered in champagne stains from the Championship celebration, stick and puck marks, loose threads and multiple repairs to the sleeves. Attached inside the collar is the Nike manufacturer’s tag size “XL” with an additional flag tag reading the size “XL”. Across the front is the Oilers team logo crest. The Captain’s “C” patch is on the upper left chest. The player number “99” is on both sleeves and on the back in blue on white on orange tackle twill. Across the back on a white nameplate is the player name “GRETZKY” in blue tackle twill. Gretzky’s custom added velcro is on the inside rear right tail and the fight strap is intact. On the rear left tail is a Nike logo. This museum quality relic with historical significance is properly tagged, was presented to us as game-used and in our opinion shows outstanding use. Accompanied by a Photo-Match.com LOA and a MeiGray LOA.
