Hardaway was selected by the Golden State Warriors in the first round of the 1993 NBA draft (third pick overall), but was traded along with three future first-round picks to the Orlando Magic for the rights to first overall pick Chris Webber. The Magic's intent was to draft Webber and pair him with Shaquille O'Neal until Hardaway – whose desire was to play alongside O'Neal – requested a second workout to show why he should be their pick. Two days before the draft, Hardaway participated in a pick-up basketball game with several Magic players and local talent and impressed the organization enough to make the draft day trade. Having played point guard in college while drawing comparisons to Magic Johnson, he started out the season at the shooting guard position as he learned how to run an NBA point from veteran Scott Skiles. By mid-season he took over point guard duties from Skiles. He immediately made an impact on the league, winning the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award at the inaugural Schick Rookie Game. Hardaway helped the Magic to their first playoff berth and first 50-win season. This is a black mesh pinstripped uni. Dual Champion labels on the front left tail of the jersey - one with the year: 1993/1994, exclusivity, and: BODY LENGTH +3. The other is with size 46 and wash instructions. The Champion labels show crazy wear. NBA logo embroidered on the left breast. Team name/logo across the chest. Player number (1) below that and on the back, done in blue on white tackle twill - showing amazing wear and puckering. Player name (HARDAWAY) arched across the back in white tackle twill, also showing heavy wear. The accompanying letter from Sports Investors states in part “SIA photo matched this jersey being worn by Anfernee Hardaway during his rookie season on November 19,20, and 27 and December 12,19 and 25 of 1993 and January 10, 17, 24, 26, and 29; February 2 and 6; March 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, 20, and 22; and April 1, 11, and 15 of 1994. The jersey is also matched to the Magic’s 1994 NBA Eastern Conference First Round Game 3 on May 2, 1994 and the Magic’s preseason game in London versus the Hawks on October 31, 1993. The jersey is also matched to multiple undated photos, the 1993-94 Topps Finest Anfernee Hardaway Refractor #189 basketball card; the 1993-94 Upper Deck Anfernee Hardaway #51 basketball card; the 2013-14 Panini Crusade High Praise Ink Anfernee Hardaway #4 basketball card; the 2018-19 Panini Certified Signed Sealed Delivered Anfernee Hardaway #SSD-AHW basketball card; the 2019-20 Panini Prizm Fast Break Anfernee Hardaway #12 basketball card; and the Beckett Focus on Future Stars January 1994 cover.” The shorts have dual Champion labels in the back of the waistband. One is with the year: 1991 / INSEAM +2 / RISE +2 and some black magic marker including: 93-94 / 1 (year and player number). The other is with size 38 and wash instructions. The accompanying warmup suit has like Champion labeling, with player number (1) handwritten in black marker for player attribution. The jacket is size 46 and the pants 36. Accompanied by a letter from SIA, confirming the matches.
