The United States Naval Academy’s Bill The Goat is one of the oldest mascots in the history of football. The mascot was first used in 1893. Originally only a live goat was used but since the 1960s a costumed midshipman has worn the goat head in addition to having a live goat. This Bill the Goat head is believed to be from the 1960s and we have been told by our consignor that it is one of the earliest versions of the costume.
Our consignor has given us the following statement:
"The Navy mascot head was purchased at a public sale of all the contents of A.T. Jones & Sons. This was the primary costume and mascot producer for many college and pro sports teams, including Navy and the Baltimore Orioles. The mascot head was used for a season or two, and then was sent back to A.T Jones for repair (you can still see remnants of repairs done on the head). After a year of the head sitting in the warehouse the Navy failed to pick it up. After 150 years, A.T. Jones & Sons closed their doors towards the end of the pandemic and sold off all remaining pieces of inventory, including the original Navy goat head."
Due to size, weight and fragility this piece will require additional shipping and handling charges.
