Considered by many to be basketball’s greatest gentle giant, Artis Gilmore had a storied 18 year career in both the ABA and the NBA. Known by fans as the “A-Train”, Gilmore towered over the majority of players at the time being one of the tallest centers in the 1970s and 80s at 7’2”. Gilmore was a key part of the Kentucky Colonels championship winning team in 1975 scoring 28 points and grabbing 31 rebounds in the final game of the series against the Pacers. From 1972 to 1976 Gilmore led the Colonels to consecutive playoff appearances. After the NBA-ABA merger in 1976, Gilmore signed a contract with the Chicago Bulls and led the team in scoring, rebounds, and blocks during his first season. Gilmore would go on to make playoff appearances with both the Chicago Bulls and the San Antonio Spurs making significant contributions to both offense and defense.
