When George and John Dovey acquired the Boston Red Stockings in 1907, the team name was subsequently changed to the “Doves”. When the club was purchased in 1911 the team adopted an official name, the Braves, for the first time in 1912 which are known today as the Atlanta Braves. Presented is the earliest and only known Boston Doves jersey from the historic franchise that only a few years later became the Boston Braves sourced from the family of a teammate. Inside beneath the collar is the Wright and Ditson manufacturer’s tag that is applied sideways which is customary. Embroidered below is the player name “Mattern” in chain stitching. The smaller collar was only worn during road games in 1910 as the team wore a sun collar at home. Across the front reads “BOSTON” in red felt and has original tie down strings and eyelets have been added to the sleeves. The jersey is in all original and unimprovable condition given its age with appropriate fading to the red felt and softness to the flannel. Minor discoloration and separation in a few areas are present which only adds to the beauty of this jersey. This historically significant and magnificent jersey is properly tagged, was presented to us as game-used and in our opinion shows appropriate use. Accompanied by a Family LOA.
