This excellent condition 8" x 10" black & white photo of "The Iron Horse" carries a very high-quality, 9 signature in dark blue ink against an image few would associate with this baseball immortal and paragon of strength and excellence -- swinging and missing. The photo shows that Gehrig may have regretted taking his huge cut even as he followed through, as his eyes are closed as if in frustration and disgust. Even when failing to get wood on the ball, however, Gehrig's image reveals the brute power of the man that cannot be masked by his classic heavy flannel-knit baggy uniform. One can almost see Gehrig's muscles bulging through the material, and how the power he generated in blasting 493 lifetime home runs (at the same time racking up a .340 average) derived from his massive shoulders and thick legs anchored into the turf. The flavor of the times is displayed in the hazy backdrop of a grandstand, which with its erector-set look may be D.C.'s Griffith Stadium. The photo is a treat for Gehrig collectors seeking a different depiction of the Iron Horse than usual. The photograph itself is in excellent condition.
