This full-color Velvet Tobacco company advertisement portrays the ideal man in the 1940s with guns and chewing tobacco. The ruggedly handsome Mel Ott, the player-manager of the New York Giants, was a perfect spokesman, set against a bright yellow background cleaning his trusty shotgun and flashing a million-buck smile. "Velvet" is written in white letters across Ott's red-shirted chest and on a table below are three pouches of the tobacco, shotgun shells, and a tag tied to one pouch that reads "Better Tobacco for a smoker's Merry Christmas." The 11" x 20" cardboard ad is in excellent condition with some light fraying at the edges.
