On January 12th, 1969, Super Bowl III was held at the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida. The game was the third AFL-NFL Championship game and the first to be named “Super Bowl”. The game is considered to be one of the greatest upsets in sports history. The New York Jets were considered the underdogs and AFL teams like the Jets were seen as less talented than the NFL teams of the time. The NFL Champions, the Baltimore Colts were favored to win the Super Bowl by 18 points. 3 days before the game quarterback Joe Namath promised fans he would lead the Jets to a victory which led to be true due to Matt Snell’s 4-yard touchdown run and multiple field goals from Jim Turner. By the 4th quarter the Jets had obtained a 16-0 and were able to close out the win at 16-7. This would be the only Super Bowl until Super Bowl LIII where the winning team only scored one touchdown. This is the only Super Bowl matchup that can no longer be repeated as both the Colts and the Jets are in the AFC and it has remained the Jets only championship appearance.
