The accompanying copy of the SIA letter states in part: “The jersey is tagged 1971 Set 2; the Rangers’ first year of existence as an expansion team was 1972. Quoted, from Bill Henderson’s Game Worn Guide to MLB Jerseys" (eighth edition): “The first Texas Rangers team took the field for the 1972 season wearing new double knits. One could easily surmise that the Rangers, therefore, have no history in flannel. But, that is not so. When the Senators packed up and left Washington, DC to become the Rangers after the 1971 season, they brought all of their equipment with them, including all remaining 1971 uniforms. Then, unbelievably, these jerseys were converted into Rangers jerseys by painstakingly removing all of the Senators scripts from the fronts, then rew-sewing Rangers lettering on. This amount of work would be unthinkable today. Today, the final set of Senators’ uniforms could certainly be auctioned off as highly sought after collectables. But back in 1971, they were nothing more than obsolete baggage.” This jersey appears to be a bona-fide example of this event. Scant light table evidence of the removal of the Senators script with underline exists, and the tail tagging as Set 2 1971 links it to the defunct Senators. Williams had been the Senators’ manager in 1971, and when the team moved to Texas for 1972 he retained his position. The 1972 Rangers kept the team colors of the 1971 Senators, and so the number on back is original, and displays more fading and wear than the newer, replacement Rangers wordmark on front.” Inside the neck, is the Wilson size 48 label. Team name (RangerS) is done across the front, in red and blue tackle twill. Player number (9) is done on the back, in red on navy blue tackle twill. This jersey is properly tagged, presented to us as manager-worn, and in our opinion shows appropriate wear. The accompanying SIA letter goes on to say “Therefore, it is the considered opinion of Sports Investors Authentication that this jersey is genuine and was worn by manager Ted Williams in both the 1971 season of the Washington Senators, and in the 1972 Texas Rangers’ Spring Training.
