This is the earliest Nolan Ryan jersey in existence. This jersey was originally issued to Dennis Ribant in 1966 and reissued and worn by Ryan for the end of the 1967 season as part of a group call up. A New York Times article from August 29th, 1967 announces that “13 Farmhands Recalled” by the Mets as part of the September roster expansion and one of the players listed is Nolan Ryan. Ryan is shown on subsequent scorecards as wearing #30. Ryan’s #34 from the 1966 season was not available for issuance to him in September of 1967 because it was already assigned to Cal Koonce by this time. According to a copy of Dave Grob’s notes, it is well documented that it was commonplace for Major League clubs to reissue previous seasons jerseys for late season call ups. The adolescent Mets, not having deep pockets, would fit this bill and there is further evidence to prove it, including a photo-match to a picture with the Mets pitching coach from March of 1968. It is noteworthy that Dennis Ribant was listed as being 5’11” / 175 lbs and Ryan was listed as 6’2” 165 lbs, so they were very similar sizes. The Mets early flannels were commonly reissued for extended use and this jersey is all original. Another fun fact is Ryan pitched well for the Mets in the 1969 postseason, including the World Series. He saved Game 3, pitching 2 & 1/3 shutout innings against the Baltimore Orioles. The Mets kept the series lead from there on out, and it was Ryan’s only World Series appearance of his career. On the front left tail of this incredible grey flannel, is the Wilson size 40 label, with two tags attached: SET 1 and 66. Inside the back of the neck, is grey strip tag, with: 30-40, for player number and size. ‘NEW YORK’ arched across the chest and player number (30) below that and on the back - both done in blue felt on orange tackle twill. Mets disc patch on the left sleeve. This jersey is properly tagged, presented to us as game-used and in our opinion shows excellent wear. Accompanied by letters from Sports Investors as well as Photo-Match.com, confirming the match.
