Wilt’s mythical status may be the only thing larger than himself and his records. He holds countless official NBA all-time records, setting records in many scoring, rebounding and durability categories. Among other notable accomplishments, he is the only player in NBA history to average more than 40 and 50 points in a season or score 100 points in a single NBA game. He also won seven scoring, nine field goal percentage, and eleven rebounding titles, and once even led the league in assists. Chamberlain had a very successful career, winning two NBA titles, earning four regular-season MVP awards, the Rookie of the Year award, one NBA Finals MVP award, as well as being selected to 13 All-Star Games and ten All-NBA First and Second teams. Chamberlain was subsequently enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1978, elected into the NBA's 35th Anniversary Team of 1980, and chosen as one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History of 1996. This jersey is fresh to the hobby and comes directly from the Lakers towel boy of that time, with his signed letter of provenance explaining the backstory and the letter is accompanied to this listing. The letter states, in part: ‘One of my final tasks before the start of the season was to pack up the team’s game and practice gear. During this process, Frank O’Neal informed me that the new uniforms for the upcoming season had arrived. I was instructed to pack the previous season’s uniforms for storage. As a token of appreciation, Trainer O’Neal offered me the opportunity to take one of the 1970-71 uniforms. Given my admiration for Wilt Chamberlain, the choice of his jersey was an easy one. The SIA letter is also accompanied. The SIA letter states in part that: ‘photo matched Wilt Chamberlain wearing this jersey during the 1970-1971 NBA season on December 21, 1970; January 14, 1971; and February 12, 1971. The jersey is also matched to the 1971 NBA Western Conference Finals on April 9,1971. Overall during these four games, Chamberlain had 94 points, 63 rebounds, and eight steals–registering a double-double in all four games. The jersey is also matched to four undated photos versus the Bucks; two undated photos taken during the Western Conference Finals; two undated photos versus the Bullets; one undated photo versus the Cavaliers; and one undated photo where the opponent is unknown. Lastly, the jersey is an apparent match to February 9, 1971; April 18, 1971 (1971 NBA Western Conference Finals Game 5); one undated photo versus the Cavaliers; and one undated photo versus the Bucks’. Aside from the abundance of matches, this means Wilt faced off against Lew Alcindor and Oscar Robertson while wearing this historic garment. As Wilt Chamberlain Lakers jersey go, this is at the cream of the crop. Tiernan label on the front tail of this purple durene. Team name (LAKERS) arched across the chest and player name (CHAMBERLAIN) arched across the back - both done in gold on white tackle twill. Player number (13) is done on the front and back, in white on gold shadowbox tackle twill. This is properly tagged, presented to us as game-used and in our opinion shows outstanding wear. Accompanied by our Consignor / Lakers towel boy LOP, also accompanied by letters from both Sports Investors and Photo-Match.com, confirming the matches.
