There was no official NL MVP award given out in 1929 & 1930 due to financial constraints of the times. The New York Chapter Baseball Writers’ Association, is the most distinguished fraternity of sportswriters in the nation, a brotherhood of arbiters for many of the most noteworthy distinctions in the sport. Their voting powers influence results of the Kenesaw Landis MVP, the Cy Young and, of course, the Baseball Hall of Fame induction. This was an annual dinner held by the association to recognize the best of the best. Entertainment ranged from a talk by Knute Rockne, Notre Dame football coach, to a saxophone solo by Mickey Cochrane, Philadelphia Athletics’ catcher. Awards were made to Bill Terry and Babe Ruth, who was also present for the ceremonies. Ruth received the ‘Distinguished Service Award’. Jack Dempsey and Primo Carnera were called in to furnish part of the show. Etched into the plaque is ‘NEW YORK CHAPTER BASEBALL WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA 1930 AWARD PLAYER OF THE YEAR WILLIAM HAROLD TERRY NEW YORK GIANTS IN RECOGNITION OF OUTSTANDING SKILL SPORTSMANSHIP AND BENEFICIAL INFLUENCE ON THE GAME OF BASEBALL FEBRUARY 1-1931’. The plaque is detached from the wooden base. Both the backs of the plaque, and its wooden base, are etched with ‘WALLACE TROPHY V707’. The wooden base measures approximately 21” x 14” and the total weight is approximately 8.2 lbs. The award itself is in excellent condition and the wooden base has some scratches. Heritage sold a similar 1934 Walter Johnson award in 2013 for $17,925 but that was a managerial award. Additional shipping charges may apply due to size and weight.
