Hall of Famer Bob Gibson had one of his best seasons in 1970, winning his second Cy Young award. Gibson won a career high 23 games pitching an incredible 294 innings while striking out 274 batters. Revered by St. Louis baseball fans, Gibson won nine Gold Glove Awards, was awarded the World Series MVP Award in 1964 and 1967, and won two Cy Young Awards. Presented is Gibson’s 1970 Cy Young award. The Award features a pitcher’s right hand gripping a baseball superimposed on a baseball field. Above this “CY YOUNG AWARD” is arched. A silver plaque below reads “PRESENTED TO BOB GIBSON MOST VALUABLE PITCHER NATIONAL LEAGUE 1970.” The silver relief sculpture is mounted on a black wooden base and measures approximately 13 x 16 inches. The back of the award has a brass mounting chain. Several areas of the plaque’s metal portions exhibit natural surface emulsion to the silver plating, with regionalized wear to the wood. In general, the design elements and the plaque backing are extremely well preserved and display well. Baseball's highest pitching honor awarded to the greatest pitcher in Cardinals history is accompanied by a LOA from Gibson.
