Just the second franchise after the Boston Bruins to play a home game in the NHL south of the Canadian border, the New York Americans were brought to existence through the joint efforts of renowned boxing promoter Tex Rickard and Bill Dwyer, the Big Apple's most notorious bootlegger. In existence from 1925-1942, the Americans have 11 players in the Hockey Hall of Fame. The team played their home games in Madison Square Garden, later sharing it with the New York Rangers. Fighting financial difficulties from playing second fiddle to the Rangers, and from the United States entry into World War II, they suspended operations in 1942 and never returned to the NHL. Offered is one of the most desirable hockey jersey extants. Inside the right tail of this wool sweater is a Brown’s Sports and Cycle Co manufacturer’s tag. Across the front is an incredible felt team crest reading “NY AMERICANS” beneath 6 blue felt stars. Across the back of the jersey is the player number “7” in red on blue felt below the same 6 blue felt stars. The jersey is covered with numerous team repairs throughout the front and rear body and both sleeves as well as unrepaired holes to the sleeves. This scarce sweater is properly tagged, was presented to us as game-used and in our opinion shows outstanding use. Accompanied by a Selby Colson LOA.
