This immaculately created, impeccably detailed wood carving is a delightful memento of Coney Island's legacy of hazy summer days spent reveling in the attractions of the famous boardwalk. Featured in one of the boardwalk's shops, the 1991 piece depicts the Island's halcyon days when everything from a Nathan's hot dog to Ruppert's beer to a ride on The Whip cost just a nickel (though a Turkish bath and rubdown went for a dime). Hand-carved signs for Steeplechase Park and The Wax Museum are intertwined with smaller engravings of famous comedians like Groucho Marx, Laurel & Hardy, Abbott & Costello and W.C. Fields. Like Coney Island, the object of the piece is simple, to make you smile, and we're betting a Nathan's dog it will do just that. The carving is 2' x 3' and its vibrant color and sturdy wood base has just scattered chipping.
