Hall of Famer John Peter "Honus" Wagner came out of the Pennsylvania steel mines to become the greatest player in Pittsburgh Pirates history, winning eight batting titles and driving the Bucs to four championships in the early 1900s. The stocky, bowl-legged "Dutchman" didn't look like a shortstop but played the position until he retired at age 42 in 1917 with a career .327 average. Three years later, when Wagner operated a Carnegie sporting goods shop, he signed this 3" x 8" green-tinted check for $4.60 using the name "John Wagner." The signature is in black fountain pen and rates a solid 9. The check is in excellent condition with a touch of browning around the edges.
