"Shoeless" Joe Jackson, whose .356 career average ranks third all-time, is the most renowned of the eight Chicago White Sox players to be banned for life by Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis for allegedly taking bribes to throw the 1919 World Series. In order to make a buck, Jackson played in sandlot and semi-pro games around the South for the next decade, and his whereabouts during that time has become a fascination for baseball historians. One Jackson stop is captured in this framed photograph of the Fort Porter team. While the location is undetermined, it may have been South Carolina, since Jackson was born in the Greenville area and moved back in 1932 to play for the Greenville Spinners while operating a liquor store. He died there on December 5, 1951. In the excellent condition photo, he stands with mismatched socks, sixth from the right next to the team's nattily-attired owner.
