One of baseball's saddest days was July 4, 1939 when a dying Lou Gehrig told the world that he was "the luckiest man on the face of the earth." This very rare photo signed by the Iron Horse in his dying days may be one of baseball's hardest to find pieces of Gehrig memorabilia. The occasion was two months after an ailing Gehrig took himself out of the lineup snapping a streak of 2,130 consecutive games. Subsequently diagnosed with ALS, an incurable disease that bears his name, Gehrig was honored with Lou Gehrig Day at Yankee Stadium. He was a great athlete cut down in his prime after a career in which he hit over .300 for 12 straight seasons, led the AL in home runs and RBI's three times each, won the Triple Crown in 1934, the MVP in 1936, and compiled Hall of Fame stats including a .340 average, 493 homers and 1,990 RBIs. It is a riveting photo of Gehrig struggling to compose himself, running his hand through his hair while dignitaries on the field behind him (including Babe Ruth) look on, and it was signed by Gehrig on the white area of his uniform shirt. Because Gehrig lived only two years longer, it is one of his last autographs and one that must have been signed with great melancholy. The signature is light but legible, with the "L" and "Gehrig" clear, and overall rates a 4. The photo comes with a PSA letter of authenticity.
